Lexical-Functional Grammar Research Group (LFGRG)

This research group was founded at the Department of English Linguistics at the University of Debrecen, Hungary in July 2008. Its fundamental goal is to provide an appropriate and efficient formal setting for teaching and research activities based on Lexical-Functional Grammar, a non-transformational generative linguistic model. Its members are interested in both theoretical and (computational) implementational issues, concentrating on two languages in particular: English and Hungarian.

LFGRG currently consists of the following members of our department:

  • Dr. Tibor Laczkó reader
  • Dr. György Rákosi reader
  • Dr. Ágoston Tóth senior lecturer
  • Péter Szűcs lecturer

LFGRG's central project is HUNGRAM.

About HunGram

This project aims at developing a comprehensive, computationally implemented grammar of the Hungarian language in a wide comparative setting.
HunGram is embedded within the framework of an international computational linguistic initiative known as the ParGram (Parallel Grammar) project. The ParGram project is a world-wide cooperation of generative linguists who believe that effective large-scale automatic grammars can be built using the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar.
Hungarian is of special interest to the ParGram community inasmuch as it is the only Finno-Ugric language that is involved in this collaborative investigation, exhibiting several intriguing properties that pose challenges both for theory and implementation.

We actively collaborate in every aspect of the project. Nevertheless, Tibor Laczkó and György Rákosi have an increased interest in linguistic issues, and Ágoston Tóth and Gábor Csernyi focus mainly on the computational aspects of the project.
