Tips for Taking the EYE: Listening

  • Use the pause before each listening passage to read the questions through as that will help you focus your listening.
  • There is always a task that is played ONLY ONCE while the other passages are played TWICE. Question-preview is essential in the case of texts played only once.
  • Read the instructions carefully in order to find out what kind of answer is required.
  • If the instruction tells you the number of words you can use in the answers, do not write more than the given limit. If the task instructions say that there is one correct answer, make sure you circle ONLY one solution. If you circle more answers, even if the correct answer is marked it will not be accepted.
  • When you are asked to fill in gaps, do not give alternative solutions because one may be incorrect. In such cases, none of your answers, even if one is correct, will be accepted.
  • Think about the context as you read the questions because this will help you when you listen.
  • Remember that the questions follow the order of the recording.
  • You should attend a listening course (Term 1 or 2) where you can practise the different types of listening tasks.
  • If you cannot attend a listening class make sure that you listen to authentic materials (TV, video, cinema or tape) especially because a variety of dialects can be expected in the listening passages. Visiting lectures is also suggested.
