In Task 1 (Individual long turn):
- Do not write a full composition, just prepare notes before you give your presentation.
- Discuss your topic by giving arguments for and against the main issues.
- Remember that your presentation has to be coherent so you are advised to think through how you wish to develop your topic in the preparation phase.
- Stick to the topic, do not include irrelevant details.
- When giving your presentation, do not try to read out your notes, as that is not allowed.
- Try to give a good impression of your spoken English: be fluent and accurate.
- Do not express yourself in a simplistic way: use advanced vocabulary and a variety of grammatical structures.
In Task 2 (Collaborative task):
- In the discussion with a peer candidate don’t be a passive participant – take the initiative.
- React to your partner’s responses appropriately. Avoid repeating: Yes, I agree. / No, I don’t agree. Use a variety of different ways of expressing agreement/disagreement.
- Be prepared to demonstrate your turn-taking skills such as interrupting, taking and yielding the floor, asking for clarification, asking for repetition, making suggestions, accepting/rejecting, etc.
- Do not dominate the conversation, allow your partner to contribute.
- Do not forget to complete the task you are asked to do (e.g. to rank order a list, select the three most important aspects).
- Feel free to express your own views/opinion on the given topic.
