MA in Instruction in English as a Foreign Language

 

Qualification: Instructor of English as a Foreign Language

Short description: The programme prepares students for educational, pedagogic, research, planning and development tasks in adult education, as well as for the continuation of studies in doctoral training. With this qualification participants are not entitled to teach in the state school system.

This qualification does not entitle the degree holder to teach in the Hungarian state school system. To reach the latter goal, a further degree must be obtained (see Rövidciklusú angoltanári mesterképzés).

Launch date of the programme: September 2025

Length: two terms (60 credits)

Admission requirements:

  • C1 level language certificate in English or an equivalent degree
  • a BA degree in the fields of Humanities and Teacher Education OR any BA and MA degree if the applicant has 50 credits in the fields of Humanities and Teacher Education

Admission exam:

The oral admission exam is administered by a committee of at least 2 people, who are selected from among the lecturers of the Department of English Language Pedagogy. The candidate selects one of the 6 topic areas listed below, based on which the committee members conduct an informal conversation in English with him/her. First, the applicant is asked about his/her previous education(s) and motivations for applying for the MA programme. Then the interviewers move on to the chosen topic area so that the applicant can demonstrate his/her general knowledge of the culture of English-speaking countries (primarily the UK, USA), and also his/her commitment to becoming an English language teacher. A maximum of 75 points can be awarded for the performance in the oral examination (language proficiency: 25, general knowledge of the target language countries: 25, commitment to the programme: 25).
