AN3100OMA Language Teaching Methods

This seminar aims to familiarize students with the most influential trends in language teaching methodology. Participants will have an opportunity to experience a variety of teaching methods as some of the classes will be conducted in the same fashion as is prescribed by a particular method. In some cases participants will have the opportunity to view and discuss video-recorded lessons. Reflections on and a critical evaluation of the methods demonstrated are aimed to increase participants’ awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of each method discussed. The teaching methods will include the following: The Grammar Translation Method; The Direct Method; The Audiolingual Method; The Silent Way; Community Language Learning; Suggestopedia; Total Physical Response; and The Communicative Approach.

AN3101OMA ELT Methodology 1

The course aims to provide students with a broad perspective of current classroom practice and to introduce them to basic principles by which they can evaluate the alternatives and their application. It will familiarize students with the most influential trends in language teaching methodology and the various theories of language and language learning behind them, as for a good understanding of the workings of the various methods, teachers need to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their application. The course will introduce the essentials of a communicative curriculum in FL teaching by focusing on what constitutes communicative competence and by exploring various issues in classroom management and of developing linguistic competence (the principles and practice of teaching pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar). Participants will be encouraged to evaluate and discuss various principles behind selecting and applying teaching techniques, especially from the point of view of ensuring learner involvement and enhancing motivation for learning. Trainees will be expected to perform micro teaching sessions, which will only have a formative place on the course (they will not be used for the purpose of evaluation). Assessment is based on session participation, written assignments, a progress report and an end-of-term test.

AN5100OMA ELT Methodology 2

The course aims to provide students with a broad perspective of current classroom practice and to introduce them to basic principles by which they can evaluate the alternatives and their application. The course will introduce the essentials of a communicative curriculum in EFL teaching by focusing on developing the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, writing).

AN5101OMA/AN4101OMA/ANL1810MA/ANL1030MA Classroom Practices in Focus

The course aims to raise students’ awareness of the factors that make FL teaching successful and effective for a variety of student groups in the Hungarian context; furthermore, to develop their analytical and critical thinking and presentation skills. Each session will be devoted to the analysis and evaluation of procedures and techniques applied in order to develop various aspects of communicative and intercultural competence. Input for the awareness-raising exercises and discussions will be provided by readings from the relevant literature, students’ presentations, and videoed lesson extracts.

AN5104OMA/AN4103OMA/ANL1080MA/ANL1816MA Language Test Construction and Evaluation

This course aims to familiarise students with the ways in which language tests are constructed and validated. Students will explore various techniques for testing specific aspects of communicative language ability focusing on all the four major skills. They will also have opportunities to discuss the implications of both language sampling and testing methods used. The course offers an introduction to Classical Item Analysis, focusing on basic statistical measures that help to establish the difficulty level of objectively scored test items. With respect to subjectively assessed tests, ways of calculating rater reliability will be discussed. Assessment is based on class participation and an end-of-term test. Students are expected to do home assignments, drawing on the input from course: they will have to design various test items, which will be discussed and evaluated in class.

AN5102OMA/AN4102OMA Individual Learner Differences

The course aims to introduce participants to the concept and types of individual learner differences (ILDs). Besides providing an overview of the different types of ILD variables, which include cognitive, affective and other types, participants will discuss ways of assessing and handling these variables. The course will provide ideas, methods and means of exploiting, expanding and training them – as appropriate – in the classroom. The course will also familiarize participants with the most important learning difficulties of dyslexic learners, highlighting how these learners’ special needs can be accommodated in the language classroom.

ANL1010MA ELT Methodology 1
(distance learning mode)

The course will introduce the principles behind different language teaching methodologies and will attempt to widen the number and range of options available to you as a classroom teacher. The first 3 units of this module consider the wider implications of what it means to be a language teacher in the new millennium. We will examine how views about what constitutes good practice have begun to achieve a consensus over recent years (units 1 & 2) and that this has very much been driven by the recognition of the importance of learner needs and motivation (unit 3). In doing this we will explore how views about how language should be taught has been shaped by developments in our understanding of how it is best learnt (unit 2). Units 4–8 cover, more specifically, the techniques and practices we adopt (or should/could adopt) when we are in the classroom. Beginning with an investigation into modern classroom management techniques (unit 3), we look into how a teacher might set their mind to teaching the components of the language system; the sound system (unit 4), vocabulary (units 5 & 6), & grammar (units 7 & 8) from presentation of a word or a new structure to its consolidation. The module ends with a discussion of how a teacher can recognise when learning is not going according to plan, that is, mistakes and errors occur, and what techniques they can employ to treat these (unit 8).

ANL1020MA ELT Methodology 2

The course will attempt to widen the number and range of options available to you as a classroom teacher. It will introduce the essentials of a communicative curriculum in EFL teaching by focusing on developing the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, writing) as well as various aspects of intercultural communicative competence.
