TRANSLATION - AN100065BA/AN1004OMA

The aim of the course is to familiarize first-year students with the “art” of translation by introducing them to the mechanics of translation while also focusing on vocabulary building. The classes are based on different and diverse translation exercises (news, literature, instructions, simultaneous interpretation, etc.) which allow students to understand the challenges and difficulties translators may face. The classes will further focus on both English to Hungarian and Hungarian to English translation exercises to highlight the crucial grammatical and syntactical differences between the two languages.

ADVANCED WRITING AND COMPOSITION - AN10006BA/AN1005OMA

The aim of the course is to further improve students writing and composition skill by building on what has been covered in the first semester and prepare students for the EYE examination. Throughout the semester, students will practice summary, argumentative essay, and research paper writing. Students will be asked to review each other’s work and give feedback. The course will further help students to write a strong thesis statement, formulate and support arguments, and structure their papers professionally.

OTHERWISE POSSIBILITIES IN CONTEMPORARY US POPULAR CULTURE - AN33005BA

The course consists of two separate, yet thematically intertwined blocks focusing on different movements, social issues, and their representation in contemporary popular culture, such as films, series, documentaries, and the music industry. Absolving the course will provide a general overview and a better understanding of contemporary US (popular) culture, by taking into account the forces that shape the general public and in turn also shape the popular cultural products. The course relies on theoretical frameworks that the students might already be familiar with, such as gender studies, critical race theory, film-, media studies, but also introduces fields not covered by previous classes such as posthuman theory and the notion of “otherwise movements”. Through the analysis of the films, series, and the critical readings, the student’s own interests and research, the course will position the discussed issues into a

cartography of social phenomena. The students will engage with diverse media forms, enabling a comprehensive exploration of the transformative power of art in societal discourse, providing them with an in-depth understanding of US popular culture.
