The North American Department was founded in 1991 as part of the Institute of English and American Studies. The Department was the first in Hungary to gain accreditation for a doctoral (Ph.D.) program in American Studies (1993), and also the first to have its MA program in North American Studies accredited (2008). The designation “North American” -- unique among American studies departments in Hungary -- indicates that besides US American studies, the Department’s academic profile includes Canadian Studies as well as Mexican culture and history, in which training is offered at BA, MA, and PhD levels. Emphasizing that areas of knowledge are interdependent and that different disciplines illuminate each other, the Department places a high priority on interdisciplinarity.
