Dr. Ágoston Tóth is a senior lecturer at the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Debrecen. He has been a member of the faculty since 1997. He teaches classes in the English Studies BA and MA programs, including the following courses: Introduction to Applied Linguistics, The Science of Words, Perspectives on the Lexicon, Computational Linguistics. He is a doctoral advisor, mentor in the Ph.D. program.
Tóth Ágoston's research interests include lexicon design for language modelling, computational lexicography, distributional semantics, word embeddings and ANN-based machine learning in general. He is a member of the Lexicographical Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Linguistics in 2006. The title of the dissertation was “Perspectives on the lexicon” (Budapest: Akadémiai Kiadó, 2008). His book on Distributional Semantics was published in 2014 ("The Company that Words Keep: Distributional Semantics", Debrecen: DU Press).
Ágoston Tóth also has an MSc in Information Technology and he uses this knowledge in his everyday work to support research in linguistics. In addition to this, he has been the administrator of the Moodle-based e-learning system of the Institute of English and American Studies (dleias.unideb.hu, now replaced by the university's e-learning site) for 13 years.
