A Full Professor of English, Zsolt Virágos is a literary scholar, cultural historian, and social scientist whose academic activities for well over three decades have been accomplished primarily within the disciplinary boundaries of American Studies. He is the author of several American Studies monographs and textbooks (which see below). His main areas of professional interest have so far been issues pertaining to the American social consciousness, the literary history of the U.S.A., the literature of the American South (male and female, white and black voices), the culture and literature of the African American community, the literatures of American minorities, stereotypy (esp. the stereotypes of character portrayal), myth studies (esp. myth and social consciousness, myth-and-literature issues), iconography. He has primarily taught in the North American Department of the Institute of English and American Studies of the University of Debrecen (formerly Kossuth University). As invited Teaching Associate, later as Visiting Professor, he has taught for three years at American universities (Indiana University, The University of Minnesota) and European institutions such as Joensuu University, Finland, and Partium Christian University, Romania. Former President of the Hungarian Society for the Study of English (HUSSE), currently he is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the László Országh Award. For years he served as head of department, institute director, and deputy dean.
