Tips for Taking the EYE: Reading-Writing

  • Make sure your summary includes the major message of the source text (topic statement or, in the case of narration, the final outcome). If you have misrepresented the major message, your summary will be marked 0 on all the criteria.
  • Avoid lifting even short stretches of words (except for key notions or terminology) from the original text. Always paraphrase the ideas of the source text.
  • Students with a sophisticated command of vocabulary should resist the temptation of using more than one phrase for one idea at a time (e.g. brilliant/excellent).
  • Make sure your summary does not exceed or is shorter than the specified length
  • (+/-25%).
  • Do not include irrelevant details.
  • Do not add your personal opinion. Try to restrict yourself to the original content. Do not use the original story as a pretext for expressing your own ideas.
  • Avoid moralizing or drawing a highly subjective conclusion.
