Students who choose the British track will have the opportunity to get into closer contact with the instructors of the Department of British Studies, gaining further familiarity with aspects of British, Irish, Canadian, Australian culture, history, film and literature, as well as gender studies.
Choosing the British track will be an obvious advantage to those who, at the end of their third year, wish to enroll in our MA in English Studies. Streams and tracks are, however, not separated from each other in this respect, and the MA in British Studies welcomes students from other tracks, provided that they fulfil the admission requirements. This also aplies the other way around: British track student, should they choose to do so, may be admitted to other MA programmes.
Our best students may complete their university studies in the Ph.D. programme in British Studies.
It is important to note here that the British track also provides an excellent background to those who wish to choose the MA in TEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language).
The structure of the British track
The structure of the training in the British track is clear and easily comprehensible: the number of credits to be obtained is 30. The British track will always do its best to be flexible and allow students a large measure of freedom in choosing their courses. The names indicated as "required optional" are only general umbrella terms referring to the broad categories of the subjects: these categories always contain a choice of individual courses.

Partly on the basis of feedback from British track students, the individual courses within the broader subject categories may change from year to year. Students interested in the British track are advised not be content with this general information and encouraged to consult the "Courses taught" pages of our instructors. Students are encouraged to make suggestions as to the courses they would be interested to take.
Students may freely decide whether they choose to take all the nine courses (27 credits) offered within their chosen track or supplement the number of their credits from other tracks. In the latter case, students are expected to take at least six courses (18 credits) from their chosen track, free to take the remaining three courses (9 credits) from any of the tracks or stream offered by the Institute of English and American Studies. It goes without saying that students from other tracks and stream are also very welcome to participate in our courses.
Of course, we would like British track students to choose all their courses from what is on offer from our department; therefore, we have designed a wide variety of courses and we also try to make our courses interesting and attractive for our students.
