Ashley Johnson Bavery is an associate professor of history at Eastern Michigan University and the Fulbright Országh László Distinguished Scholar of American Studies in the fall of 2026. She earned her B.A. at Mount Holyoke College and her M.A. and PhD at Northwestern University. Her first book, Bootlegged Aliens: Immigration Politics on America’s Northern Border, won the First Book Award from the Immigration and Ethnic History Society. She specializes in the history of Central and Eastern European migration to the United States and more recently, on Muslim immigrants in the United States during the early 20^th century. She has taught classes on U.S. immigration, race relations, and foreign policy, and at the University of Debrecen, she will teach a course on United States Immigration and Migration History. She looks forward to working with UD undergraduates and graduate students interested in United States history and culture and welcomes meetings in her office hours or by appointment.
